Football 2001

This year was a fantastic year for Grant football as both the Frosh/Soph and the Varsity won league titles. The Frosh/Soph finished 8-1 (5-0) and the Varsity finished 6-3(5-0). The Varsity has now won 2 league titles back to back along with carrying an 11 game league-winning streak. The Varsity was led by sophomore sensation Anthony Dickson, who rushed for 1350 and 19 touchdowns, Shawn Huntsinger, Carlos Mendez, Julius Roberts, Hector Bernal, Paolo Ayala, Ben Roman, Remy Salvador and Jonathon Fonua. Update:

Manual Arts:

        The Lancer Frosh/Soph won last Thursday 27-21 against the Toilers of Manual Arts.  The game went back and forth with the lead changing hands 4 times, but with the less than 3 minutes left in the game the lead was given to the Lancers for good when sophomore tailback Jose Cortez danced and juked his way to the end zone.  Cortez lead the team in rushing with 80 yards on 10 carries. The other scores were put in by freshman Randy Molina, and Sophomores Ricardo Crisanto and Dashawn Smith.    1-0

San Fernando:

        In respect for the national tragedies of September 11, the game against San Fernando High School was cancelled. All LAUSD games scheduled for the week were cancelled; subsequently the season will consist of 9 games. The missed games will not be rescheduled.  1-0

Franklin:

        The Lancers tasted bitter defeat to the Panthers 22-7 at Franklin High. Freshman Randy Molina, who rushed for 99 yards and scored the only touchdown on a 50-yard run, bravely led the Lancers. Randy also led the defense with 7 solo tackles. Receivers Marquis Powell and Mario Rangel also had a good game combining for 5 receptions for 50 yards. They continued contribution would be needed this week when Grant faces the Cavaliers of Cleveland. The game will be played at Cleveland, with the Kickoff scheduled for 4:00pm. 1-1

Cleveland:

        After two years of very tough losses to the Cleveland, the Lancers were finally able to overcome the Cavaliers 27-6 at Cleveland High. The Lancers were lead by Dashawn Smith who was 11 for 20 for 185 yards and 3 Touchdown passes. Two of those touchdown passes went to Marquis Powell who finished with 4 catches for 106 yards. Randy Molina also had an excellent game with 12 solo tackles and a fumble recovery. Randy also had 51 yards rushing and a touchdown on offense. The Lancers are now 2-1 going into this week’s game at Reseda at 4:30. 2-1

Reseda High:

        The Lancers prevailed again 21-6 over Reseda, improving to 3-1 for the season and heading into Sunset 6 league play. Heroes of the game were Dashawn Smith with 3 touchdown passes despite being slowed down by an injury, Marquis Powell with 2 touchdown receptions on 4 catches and Jose Cortez with 89 yards rushing. The defense had another outstanding game only allowing Reseda one score late in the game. The Frosh/Soph face Canoga Park this week at home on Thursday. It should be a good game matching two passing offenses. 3-1

 

Canoga Park: 

        The Lancers defeated the 3-1 Hunters 21-14 with a final drive lasting four minutes led by offensive linemen Manny Gonzalez, Moe John, Jose Jordan, John Fonua and Alex Gutierrez. Along with running backs Jose Cortez and Randy Molina, the line dominated the Hunters to seal the victory. Other heroes were Dashawn Smith throwing for 2 touchdown passes and scoring the final one on a short run. Marquis Powell catching both TD’s to extend his streak to 3 games in a row in which he catches two touchdown passes. Defensively, Oscar Rivera contributed greatly with two interceptions. The Lancers will play Hollywood High for Homecoming at Valley College at 4pm. Good Luck Lancers!!!!   4-1

Hollywood:

        The Lancers were victorious against the Sheiks of Hollywood High for a Homecoming victory at Valley College. The Lancers struggled through the first half trailing 12-7 at half time, but turned things around in the second half. Quarterback Dashawn Smith had his best game of the season despite throwing an interception for a touchdown. He was 18 for 29 for 289 yards and 3 touchdown passes, one to Carlos Aguilar (4 catches for 80 yards), Oscar Rivera (4 catches for 21 yards) and Marquis Powell (6 catches 112 yards). Jose Cortez also had a great game with over 100 yards multiple purpose yards. Defensively Mario Rangel and Randy Molina had a great game. The Lancers face 5-1 Poly at Poly High. This should be a great game. 5-1

Poly:

        The Lancers beat the Parrots of Poly by the score 29-14 to improve their record to 6-1 overall. The Lancers were lead by Jose Cortez, who rushed for over 100 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. The Lancers are now in first place in the Sunset Six going into rival North Hollywood. 6-1

North Hollywood:

        The Frosh/Soph dominated their rivals 33-14 at North Hollywood. Dashawn Smith showed again why many are considering him the Varsity QB of the future by passing for 323 yards and 4 touchdowns passes. He threw 2 to Oscar Rivera (5 catches for 88 yards), 1 to Marquis Powell (4 catches for 94 yards) and 1 to tight-end Ricardo Crisanto (4 catches for 60 yards). The defense also played well, shutting down the Huskies. The Lancers have claimed at least a tie for the league title and can win it out right next week against the 2 time defending champion Verdugo Dons.7-1

Verdugo Hills:

        Congratulations to the 2001 Lancer Frosh/Soph for winning the Sunset Six League Championships by going 5-0 in league and 8-1 overall. The Lancers crushed the Dons of Verdugo 27-0 to claim revenge for last years defeat. The Lancers were led by Dashawn Smith, who passed for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns and Jose Cortez, who combined for over 100 yards passing and receiving and 2 touchdowns. Oscar Rivera, Marquis Powell, Manny Gonzalez, Randy Molina and Ricardo Crisanto have outstanding games. The Varsity team also won the league title and will be a part of the L.A. Championship playoffs next week. Many of our Frosh/Soph heroes will join them in their quest. 8-1

Awards Banquet:

        During December, the Awards Banquet was held.
