short pass. Defensively the Lancers
totally shut down Manual Arts, allowing them almost no scoring
possibilities. Shawn Huntsinger and Gabe Stasilli
lead the defense with 2 sacks each, Hector Bernal anchored down the linebackers
while Ben Roman held the
secondary. Next up for the Lancers, a power Franklin Panther team, who beat

Lancers; Palisades High away.
Game 3 Palisades
The Lancers lost to the Dolphins of Palisades 26-8 at Palisades. The
Lancers were hurt by miscues at the
beginning of the game and then poor tackling throughout. Offensively the
Lancers were lead by Quarterback
Julius Roberts with 68 yards on 11 carries as well as 42 yards passing with a
touchdown pass to Hector Bernal.
Marques Reyes and Hector Bernal combined for 124 yards rushing.
Defensively the Lancers were lead again by
Julius Roberts with 6 tackles and Ben Roman and Richard Romero with 5 each.
Next up for the Lancers an undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers team.
Game 4: Cleveland
The Lancers were crushed on Friday (10/1) 54-0 by the
Cavaliers of Cleveland High.
Inexperience and speed took its toll as well as miscues for the Lancers, who
dropped to 1-3. The frosh/soph.
offense was lead by Hector Bernal, who had 6 carries for 80 yards.
Defensively the Lancers were lead by
sophomores Shawn Huntsinger with 7 tackles, Ben Roman, 5 tackles and 4 assists,
and Hector Bernal with 4
tackles and 4 assists. The Lancers must continue to improve the passing
game, which was ineffective again, the
offensive line and quarterbacks will fight to improve this week. The
Lancers next Friday will face the Regents of
Reseda, who were dropped by Canoga Park.
Game 5: Reseda
Unfortunately another loss for the Lancers, who dropped to 1-4 after a 32-6
loss to the Regents of Reseda. The
Lancers were again hurt by turnovers and penalties, the Lancers had 7 in the
first half alone. The young Grant
squad was lead by quarterback Julius Roberts and Linebacker/Receiver Ben
Roman. Roberts had 125 yards and 1
touchdown in the air. Roman had 5 tackles and 3 assists along with a touchdown
catch on 4 catches. The Lancers
definitely improved the passing game, although still have a long way to go.
Grant will face rival North Hollywood at
North Hollywood this week...BEAT THOSE HUSKIES!!!!!!
Game 6: North Hollywood
The Lancers opened up Sunset 6 league play friday
afternoon with a 35-15 loss to the Huskies of North
Hollywood. The Lancers game out roaring, with the first possession taking
down to the 15 yard line, but were left
empty, until the their second possession, when scrabbling quarterback Julius
Roberts hit Hector Bernal for a 25
yard touchdown strike. The Lancers went into Half-time down 12-7, after making
some miscues, but held tough.
The second half was a different story for the Lancers, giving up 23
points. The Lancer did not come away without
some good performances, Linebacker Ben Roman, in only his second start after
leading the secondary at safety,
had 13 solo tackles. Hector Bernal had 8 tackles and had 2 assists, and Shawn
Huntsinger followed with 6 solo tackles and 1 assist. Offensively Hector Bernal
had 78 yards on 15 carries and 2 touchdowns, Julius Roberts had 45 yards
rushing, and 102 yards passing along with one touchdown pass to Bernal. The
Lancers will have to work this week on cutting down on miscues and
penalties, which lead to stopping key drives and scoring opportunities.
The Lancers will also have to work on
special teams. Next up for the Lancers, the Dons of Verdugo Hills, finally at
home after 4 games away.
Game 7: Verdugo Hills
The Lancers suffered another defeat, this time to the
Dons of Verdugo Hills, who came onto the Lancer field with a
5-1 record. The Lancers fought courageously in the first half only down 10-6,
but could not hold on and were
defeated 32-12. The Lancers were lead by an outstanding performance by Julius
Roberts who accounted for over
200 yards total offense. Remy Salvador and Ben Roman also had a solid game.
Remy caught a touchdown pass and
Roman anchored the Defense throughout.
Game 8: Canoga Park
A heartbreak of a game for the Lancers, who tied the
Hunters of Canoga Park 20-20 at home on thursday. The
Lancers had many opportunities to put the game away, but were unable. The
Lancers improved in most facets of
the game, especially defense, were the Lancers held the Hunters in check for a
majority of the game. The defense
was lead by Ben Roman, Chris Vasquez, along with Shawn Huntsinger and Israel
Salas. The offense was lead again
by quarterback Julius Roberts and running back Hector Bernal , along with
receivers Ben Roman and Remy
Salvador. Roberts scored on the ground and through the air by way of Salvador.
Hector Bernal scored a defensive
touchdown to give the Lancers 20 points. The Lancers next face The Sheiks of
Hollywood High for Homecoming.
Game 9: Hollywood (Homecoming)
The Lancers were defeated once again by a scrappy
Hollywood team, 24-14 at Valley College. The Lancers had
many scoring opportunities, but were unable to connect. The Lancers were
confused and frustrated by the Sheiks
who continuously moved the ball in key situation and using generally the same
play again and again. The Lancers
defense will have nightmares about the double screen, which the Lancers were
unable to defend. The Lancers were
also haunted on offense by penalties, the Lancers had 5 alone in the first
quarter giving up two touchdowns in the
process. The inexperience for the Lancers again struck them right before the
half as the Sheiks scored late to give
them an 18-14 advantage, when the kickoff was returned all the way to the 5
yard line, and subsequently punched in
for 6. On a positive note, the Lancers were lead by sophomore sensations Julius
Roberts and Hector
Bernal, who combined to rush for over 250 yards. Shifty Roberts, shake and
baked for 98 yards on 9 carries and
Bernal had 168 yards and 15 carries. The offense had over 400 yards total
for the game. The tandem will be a very
exciting addition to next years varsity squad who won 48-7 lead by 3 Juniors
Perry Clayton, Matt Carter and
Alfonso Estrada. Defensively for the Lancers, Ben Roman lead the Charge
with 8 solo tackles, while Shawn
Huntsinger pressured the quarterback all game long..
Game 10: Poly
The game was canceled due to the fact that asbestos was
found in the gymnasium area, it was unfortunate for the Lancers, who had a
great practice week.
